Papers, 1786-1806.

Predominantly correspondence received by Ludwig Cobenzl from Austrian diplomats and aristocrats, with a few letters also from Prussian, Russian, and British diplomats and aristocrats, all in French. The letters primarily concern relationships between Austria and these countries as they opposed France during the Napoleonic Wars. Preparations for the marriage of the Archduke Joseph to a daughter of the emperor of Russia in 1799 and reactions to Ludwig's dismissal in 1805 are two other recurring topics. A short series at the end of the collection contains a small amount of correspondence of Ludwig's cousin Johann Philipp Cobenzl (Habsburg foreign minister, 1792-1793; Austrian diplomat in Belgium), two letters from Prince Repnin of Russia (writing to a member of another Austrian aristocratic family, mentioned elsewhere in the Cobenzl correspondence), and a treatise in German on the state of the Austrian army.
